Last March 20, 2015, we were asked to attend a big lecture about Albert Einstein as a scientist an activist. There were 3 speaker who talked about Albert Einstein but before they started Dr. Peracullo gave an opening remarks about the centennial Einstein, she talked about Albert Einstein who is an activist specifically a peace activist. She also said that Albert Einstein is a model philosopher who is not just concerned about philosophy but rather a philosopher who is truly concerned about transformation of society in a peaceful manner.
After the remarks, the first speak Mr. Robert Boyles begun his lecture. Mr. Boyles focused his lecture about Einstein’s allergy to wars that lead to Russell-Einstein Manifesto. A theory that was made to seek peace in resolving issues between countries, it was made right after the cold. Scientist should be silent in this issue they must be aware and involved in promoting peace in any aspects of their life most especially in promoting transformation. What he simply want to impose to the readers of the manifesto is the dangers of nuclear weapons, because we all know that during the time of war activist or those people who are aiming and promoting equality are using and had begun the usage of nuclear weapons and for Russell and Einstein through this manifesto they could warn and they would move other people toward peaceful activism. He also emphasized there the quote “we appeal to Human being, remember humanity and forget the rest” in this he was telling that in whatever things that we have we must always remember the people that around us that could be affected by every action and every decision that are about to make because it is the main factor for transformation.
The second speaker was Mr. Demetrio, one thing that I got from him is his illustration about a man who was deciding about whether to go there in space or not. Scientist are also exposed in philosophy and in this decision making involves philosophy. Why? Because they were caught between their wanting to go to space but also caught in thinking about what is the purpose of going there if when the time comes that they came back their life before was all gone their families, their children are much more older than them. He also talks about Stephen Hawking who argues that philosophy is dead. The real question in philosophy is “where do we come from?” and this was only answered through philosophical point of view but Hawking argues that it will never be answered because it philosophy is dead therefore we should not asked for our existence if we are basing it to philosophical point of view.
Among the 3 speakers, the first lecture was the one who had caught me because first Einstein as one of the scientist who promotes peaceful activism because as we all know the Philippines or rather the world is experiencing war between other countries or maybe within its country like what happened in mamasapano. I agree with him that we can truly attain and resolve issues peacefully and we could be an activist in a peaceful manner without putting other people’s lives in danger.
